Julia Butters was born in Los Angeles to Darrin Butters and Lorelei Butters. Her father, Darrin, is a Disney animator originally from Kearney, Nebraska, who has worked on notable films like Frozen and Ralph Breaks the Internet. Her mother, Lorelei, is a homemaker from Los Angeles.

Butters began her acting career at the age of 2, initially appearing in commercials before securing her first speaking role as Gabby Hoffer on Criminal Minds (2014). She gained further recognition in 2016 with a recurring role as Ella in the Amazon Prime Video series Transparent, and later starred as Anna-Kat Otto on American Housewife.
